Places
A 2 track house ep (14m 48s) — released December 6th 2024 on Mas O Menos
Music to me has always been about transporting you to a place/time, and I'm a firm believer that there is no objectively 'bad' music, and every piece has a time and place that suits it best. This EP was very much designed with this purpose in mind - It is best served in the sun, on a beach or by a pool. If you're not there, then the intention is that this will take you there.
Sometimes the best tracks come from putting wild restrictions on ourselves. 'Tisno' initially actually started as a bit of a wild experiment, with the aim being an attempt to combine as much of my music background/influence into one track as possible. So, this meant mixing Hip Hop, House, Progressive/Trance, Downtempo, live guitar and some Eastern instrumentation samples (The original version even includes a 2 minute long rap verse recorded by me). When starting out, I thought the end result would be something like a frankensteins monster. Somewhere along the way, the beast turned into a beauty, and I have to say it has to be one of my proudest creations, due to the self imposed brief. Probably, by definition, the most 'me' track I've made yet.
'Places' is a track which samples vocals from my close friend Reny. Having grown up in Bulgaria, and lived in Spain, her voice sounds rather unique. I kept the brief deliberately vague when recording her, and I was shocked with how this sample was so on the nose of the EP's aim. Having produced 'Tisno' first, I wanted to channel the same surroundings into this track, but with a more driving feel. The sense and feeling of nature and natural-ness is really important across the EP, with this track achieving that through the dynamic flute and filtered pads. The specific 'Place' of this track is definitely a Mediterranean island with lots of lush greenery, but it also seeks to transport the listener as much through time as it does in space, with it's sense of familiarity.
2 tracks that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Paul Oakenfold Global Underground compilation album from 1993. ‘Places’ is laced with soaring pads and trance inducing vocals while ’Tisno’ offers a bouncy baseline and driving synths that commands the dance floor. Great release, excited to see what else Compass has in store for us - Snowy DJ
